Real Tamale United moved level on points with Zone 1 League leaders Berekum Arsenal as a Fawzan Alhassan first goal of the season saw off stubborn Wa Suntaa SC.

Fawzan drilled in RTU’s tenth league goal this season – with a fine finish after captain Hardi Mohammed Abdulai had put the host in the lead through a penalty in the first half, to hand United their sixth win in 8 games.

The away side side would perhaps say they are unfortunate not to have left the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium with at least a point from a thoroughly entertaining game but they also needed several fine saves from their goalkeeper to keep them in it.

Coach Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko’s side have displayed their ability to grind out points away from home in recent weeks, as evidenced in 1-0 trip to Paga, having already beaten Kintampo FC and Young Apostles at their backyards.

But they have also shown a willingness to go toe-to-toe with teams who are happy to open up the game. A number of fluid first-half moves produced chances before Fawzan was brought down in the penalty box and Hardi composed himself to open his season account.

The Pride of the North were three points behind Berekum Arsenal after a 1-0 defeat by Tamale City at home in week five on but have made up that gap in just three weeks to set an intriguing qualification race into motion.

Real Tamale United is still unbeaten in four away matches this season but will have their strength tested by Mighty Royals when they visit the Wonamafo Community Park on Wednesday.
