Alhassan Basira opened her goal account in the National Women’s League but the Black Maidens midfielder’s strike was not enough to secure victory as Pearlpia Ladies were held to a 1-1 draw by Fabolous Ladies at Kasalgu Utrecht Park on Saturday.
Baba Nuhu Mallam’s side were desperate to open their 2020-21 season with a win and take a step to become champions in Ghana for the first time, but Agnes Aduako’s opening goal settled the nerves for the away side.
While a point will be enough for the Kumasi-based women’s team, it was a disappointing end to a frustrating week for Baba Nuhu Mallam, who was optimistic about the new campaign.
This year the Champions of the National Women’s League will represent Ghana in the Innuagural CAF Champions League for women and as such, competition for the only ticket would be duly contested for.
Pearlpia boss Baba Nuhu Mallam told sports24online.com: “We made mistakes, individual mistakes, and didn’t get close enough and they punished us.
“I am not putting ourselves down. Today was painful in the first half in football terms because their level of play showed where we need to aspire to be. In the second half I saw a reaction, but the work needs to be done.”
