SWAG-Northern Region engage RTU Volleyball team in a game to mark World Sports Journalist Day

The Northern Regional branch of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG NR) has marked this year’s World Sports Journalist Day with a volleyball match with the Real Tamale United volleyball team.

The match took place on Friday morning at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium Annex volleyball court where the RTU team trains.

Sports journalist across the region participated in the event which ended successfully. Players of the two teams played against each other in a mixed selection basis with the aim of fostering unity, togetherness and cooperation. It was also an opportunity for SWAG NR members to de-stress from the daily tight schedules in the line of duty.

World Sports Journalists Day is celebrated on 2nd July every year in order to recognise the efforts of sports journalists. The International Sports Press Association (AIPS) with SWAG as an affiliate was established on this day in 1924 at the Summer Olympics in Paris. The anniversary of this association is also celebrated on this day.

AIPS, the founding organisation of the World Sports Journalists Day which turns 97 this year via its official social media accounts have extended its greetings to sports journalists around the world. They shared the link to a virtual event for celebrating World Sports Journalists Day in a tweet earlier in the day.

World Sports Journalist Day is not only observed to celebrate the foundation of AIPS it encourages professionals to use sports as a medium for world peace. In addition, it also aims to acknowledge and encourage sports journalists to do better in their various endeavours.
