Italian sports minister Vincenzo Spadafora has submitted a letter to the football governing body, questioning UEFA’s decision to hold 2020 Champions League final in Istanbul.

“We know well that the seriousness of what is happening in Syria will not be resolved with this act [removing Turkey as Champions League hosts] but we are all aware of the importance (political, media, economic, cultural) that belongs to one of the most important sporting events in the world.”

UEFA refused to provide any comments. It is known though that VP Michele Uva commented to an Italian radio station (via AP News ) that it’s “absolutely premature to talk about sanctions.”

The situation will reportedly be assessed at the next UEFA meeting in December.

Istanbul’s Ataturk Olympic Stadium was picked by UEFA last year. Turkey have since got involved in military operations in Syria.
